English
Understanding of English requires
1. Identifying the verb
2. Identifying the subject of the verb
3. Identifying the object of the verb if there is one
4. Identifying what the pronoun refers to
5. Identifying what the modifier modifies
If any of these is missing, then there will be confusion.
If there is misspelling, wrong tense, determinate error, or any of a number of
grammatical errors not related to those mentioned, then understanding is possible.
Details of English are secondary.
The material I present, and the material I encourage the students to present
will be in English.
Each class will include new ideas (presented in English.)
Each class will include a discussion (in English.)
Each class will include taking dictation (in English.)
Each class will include a (homework) assignment (in English.)
Corrections to the English used by the students will primarily be in the form
of asking them what they meant, and did they say/write what they meant.
As opportunity arises, the less important rules of English will be presented
briefly.
Correct spelling will be encouraged by pointing out how others perceive the
importance of spelling. After all, language is used for communicating with
others.
By emphasizing the detail of correct spelling, other details will be considered
less bothersome and more necessary.
For those people who consider nuances of acceptable English important, I would
like to point out the following: Link
This is a link to a google search. Having the top position on a google search
is perhaps worth hundreds of dollars per day more than having the second
position. If you look at what is written on the website in first position for the competition to get highest ranking for the search term, "Elursrebmem" (members rule spelled backword), you
will see that grammar and spelling is not so important (the author is Swedish.)
I realize that for complicated ideas, grammar is important. However, these are
not possible without the basic ideas for which much of grammar is not
important.
I intend to take the straightest path possible to communicate some ideas which
can help prevent some suffering. Moreover, these ideas can be used to have fun.
Much of my experience with life, including science, mathematics, and English
has been in pursuit of fun.
I consider fun an important part of life, and I have noticed that some
other people agree.
I emphasize the importance of having ideas. English is helpful
for getting ideas, learning ideas, and presenting ideas.
There is a list of 185 essay topics. It would be helpful for
people to be able to easily write a ten minute essay on each of these topics. |
